DP World Deploys SANY Electric Terminal Tractors At Jeddah Port

Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - DP World has installed 35 electric terminal tractors produced by Chinese manufacturer SANY at the South Container Terminal (SCT) at Jeddah Islamic Port, marking another step forward in its $800 million commitment to modernize one of Saudi Arabia's busiest container gateways.

SANY supplies zero-emission heavy-duty yard tractors for container ports, logistics centers, and distribution hubs. The units can handle loads of up to 75 tonnes and use either fast-charging or battery-swapping technology, with an operational range of more than 120 kilometers, making them a greener option to traditional diesel-powered terminal equipment.

The new electric terminal tractors transport containers between the quayside and the storage yard, increasing DP World's terminal tractor fleet by more than 20 percent. The company anticipates the deployment to lower the fleet's yearly carbon emissions by roughly 20% while enhancing equipment availability, operational resilience, and vessel turnaround time.

The project is part of DP World's objective to electrify all terminal equipment at SCT by 2030, which supports both the company's decarbonisation goals and Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 aspiration to create a globally competitive and sustainable logistics industry. As cargo volumes across the Red Sea increase, the switch to electric equipment is projected to boost efficiency throughout port operations.

The investment is part of DP World's overall renovation of the South Container Terminal into a more automated, efficient, and environmentally friendly operation. Earlier this year, the business commissioned three semi-automated quay cranes, bringing the terminal's total ship-to-shore crane fleet to 17.
