Prufrock TBMs Advance Dubai Loop With Simultaneous Excavation And Tunnel Lining

Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - The Boring Company is beginning to deploy its Prufrock tunnel boring machines (TBMs) on the Dubai Loop project, demonstrating a tunnelling technique that concurrently digs tunnels and places precast concrete liner to dramatically speed up subterranean construction.

The milestone comes as The Boring Company begins production on some 25,000 precast concrete tube parts at its Dubai site. Each section weighs about 1.8 tonnes and will be used as the structural lining for the first 6.4km phase of the subterranean transit network being developed in conjunction with Dubai’s Roads and transit Authority (RTA).

Unlike traditional TBMs, which often have separate excavation and tunnel lining operations, Prufrock machines build the concrete segments as tunneling proceeds, therefore saving construction time, and increasing productivity. The business can remotely monitor and manage tunneling operations from its Operations Center in Bastrop, Texas, to provide it real-time monitoring of equipment performance.

The first phase of Dubai Loop contains four stops connecting DIFC, ICD Brookfield Place, Za’abeel Dubai Mall Parking and Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall. The project would reduce travel time between DIFC and Dubai Mall from around 20 minutes to about three minutes.

The first phase, valued at over AED600 million ($163 million), is expected to be completed within two years.

For the heavy equipment sector, the project highlights the growing importance of next-generation tunnel boring machines that can integrate the excavation, lining installation and digital remote operation into a single, continuous process, leading to increased productivity and reduced overall project delivery times for large underground infrastructure projects.
