Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Emirates has begun construction on a $5.1 billion engineering complex at Dubai South, which will grow to be one of the biggest and most sophisticated airplane repair and overhaul facilities in the world.
China Railway Construction Corporation is carrying out the project, while Artelia has been designated as a project consultant.
The complex, which will cover 1.1 million square meters, will include one of the biggest buildings in the world by volume as well as the largest steel structure in the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The project will have two paint hangars specifically built to handle Emirates' expanding fleet in addition to a large hangar facility that can service 28 wide-body aircraft at once.
Other significant facilities include a landing gear workshop, 77,000 square meters of repair workshops, 380,000 square meters of logistics and storage space, and the biggest free-span aircraft hangar in the world, which is 285 meters wide.
In order to support Emirates Engineering activities, the project will also contain training facilities, administrative offices, and airside operating infrastructure.
With sustainable elements including rooftop solar panels and energy-efficient infrastructure, the property aims for LEED Platinum certification.
The facility will initially serve heavy maintenance operations and overflow work from Emirates Engineering's current operations at Dubai International Airport. Construction is expected to be finished by the middle of 2030.
The project is a component of Dubai's larger aviation growth plan, which is connected to the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and Al Maktoum International Airport.
