Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Hutchison Ports Sohar, the operator of the Oman International Container Terminal at Sohar Port, has prioritized Omani import and export cargo as regional shipping interruptions caused by tensions with Iran reconfigure trade patterns.
The move comes as Sohar emerges as a new destination for boats and cargo diverted from impacted regional ports.
The operator said that it would continue to prioritize local "gateway cargo" while also enabling landbridge shipments, which include goods arriving by sea being transferred overland by vehicle to or from Oman.
To accommodate increased volumes, the port has implemented additional operating measures, such as up to 21-day prior booking visibility and a 3,000-TEU limit per vessel call. Berthing will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis, rather than on predetermined timetables.
Export cargo will be allowed within a five-day window before the vessel arrives, while import free storage has been limited to five days. Additional restrictions have been implemented for empty containers, dangerous and large goods, and chilled exports.
The operator cautioned that if congestion worsens, other limitations, including as cargo acceptance limits and changes to vessel operations, might be imposed without notice.
The steps reflect Sohar Port's rising significance as a crucial logistical gateway in the area, as supply networks adapt to persistent marine disruption.
