Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - DP World has delivered three new Mobile Harbor Cranes (MHCs) to Syria's Port of Tartous, the next step in a $800 million commitment to modernize the Mediterranean port and boost the country's rebuilding commercial infrastructure.
The cranes are estimated to increase Tartous' cargo handling capacity by about 40%, boosting vessel turnaround and the transfer of containers, bulk, and breakbulk cargo.
The equipment is part of DP World's 30-year concession to develop and manage Tartous. Additional improvements will include harbor dredging, quay wall repair, digital systems, and more cargo-handling technology.
More equipment has already been planned. Forklifts and reach stackers will arrive later in 2026, followed by nine more light-duty mobile harbor cranes in 2027 and early 2028. A new quay crane is set to arrive in 2028.
DP World will also expand the harbor to handle bigger boats, with dock rehabilitation scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
The investment comes as Syria rebuilds important transportation and logistics infrastructure, with Tartous poised to play a bigger role in connecting the nation to Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, as well as trade routes connecting the Eastern Mediterranean with the Gulf, Europe, and North Africa.
