Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - At the Kansanshi Copper Mine in Zambia, Hitachi Construction equipment showcased their fully battery-powered dump truck, demonstrating advancements in low-emission mining equipment.
Following a feasibility trial that took place between June 2024 and August 2025, the demonstration was organized in collaboration with First Quantum Minerals. At the occasion, some thirty mining customers saw the truck run and get charged via overhead trolley wires.
The battery dump truck achieved zero carbon emissions while traveling more than 4,000 kilometers and moving more than 30,000 tons of material throughout the experiment. Additionally, the machine showed better acceleration and lower noise levels.
Zambia's energy mix, which is mostly driven by hydropower, helped the experiment by creating a favorable atmosphere for electric mining equipment.
A wider drive toward integrated mining solutions was reflected in the exhibition, which also included other equipment and digital solutions from the firm, such as electric excavators, trolley trucks, and fleet management systems.
As part of initiatives to lower emissions and boost efficiency in mining operations, the business said that real-world data from the experiment would assist ambitions to commercialize the battery dump truck by 2027.
