Rwanda Launches First Heavy-Duty Electric Truck Fleet

Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Bank of Kigali Plc partners with Numa Logistics and electric mobility expert Kabisa to bring the country's first fleet of heavy-duty electric trucks to Rwanda.

The first deployment will feature 12 electric trucks, nine of which are heavy-duty vehicles with payloads of more than 35 tonnes and three smaller trucks for minor transport activities.

Under the arrangement, the Bank of Kigali will finance up to 60% of the vehicle expenditures, Numa Logistics will run the fleet and Kabisa will source and import the vehicles. The project will be performed in three stages and the overall cost is projected to be above $7 million.

The new trucks are projected to dramatically lower running costs compared to diesel-powered vehicles, with operators saying they might save up to 60% in energy and operational costs.

The effort is a key milestone for Rwanda’s logistics industry and extends the country’s expanding electric mobility ecosystem from motorcycles, passenger cars and buses into heavy freight transport.

The initiative would enhance more sustainable logistics operations and improve transport efficiency in sectors including agriculture, commerce and industrial supply chains and position Rwanda as an emerging market for electric commercial vehicles in Africa.
