Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has formed a collaboration with The Boring Company of the United States to develop the Loop, an underground passenger transportation system.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit 2026, after technical and feasibility assessments undertaken over the previous year.
The first phase includes a 6.4-kilometer prototype route with four stations that connect significant business and retail sectors, including the Dubai International Financial Centre and Dubai Mall. Construction on the pilot phase is planned to commence after the design and preparatory work are finished.
The pilot is scheduled to cost around $154 million and be completed within a year. The whole network might be around 22 kilometers long, with 19 stations linking regions such as the Dubai World Trade Centre, the financial sector, and Business Bay, with a total cost of about $545 million and a three-year development timeframe.
The system will employ subterranean tubes with a diameter of 3.6 metres built to transport electric passenger cars, with the goal of lowering congestion and travel times in densely populated regions. The pilot route is projected to transport around 13,000 people per day, increasing to over 30,000 passengers per day if the whole alignment is finished.
The project would be The Boring Company's first tunneling venture outside of the United States, and it is part of Dubai's larger ambition to deploy new transportation technologies and promote long-term urban expansion.
