Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - At the Bagdad mining site in Arizona, Freeport-McMoRan's autonomous haulage fleet has transported over 50 million tonnes of material.
The fleet, which consists of 33 modified Caterpillar 793 haul trucks that operate independently around the site, is powered by the Cat MineStar Command system.
The milestone demonstrates how autonomous haulage technology is increasingly contributing to the US mining industry's increased production, efficiency, and operational consistency.
The business said that when new technologies were incorporated into everyday operations, the shift to autonomous operations also included workforce development activities, such as retraining and reskilling programs for haul truck operators.
According to Freeport, as part of its long-term mining plan, the Bagdad operation is still concentrating on integrating automation with labor investment.
The milestone is a reflection of the industry's wider embrace of autonomous mining technologies, which are intended to improve safety, lower operating costs, and facilitate more effective material transportation.
