Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - DP World has added three new semi-automated quay cranes manufactured by China's ZPMC to its terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port, increasing capacity as maritime traffic resumes to the Red Sea.
Each crane has a lifting capability of 65 tonnes and is intended to improve berth productivity by enabling the port to accommodate many mainline vessels at once.
The additional units boost the terminal's total number of ship-to-shore cranes from 14 to 17, with plans to extend to 22 in future development stages.
The expansion is part of a $800 million modernization effort that has already expanded terminal capacity from 1.8 million to 4 million TEUs, with a long-term goal of 5 million TEUs.
DP World's South Container Terminal has a 2,150-metre quay with an 18-metre depth, allowing it to handle up to five ultra-large container vessels at once.
The expansion comes as maritime traffic in the Red Sea restarts after recent interruptions, with the terminal expected to handle more than 1.3 million TEUs by 2025, boosted by an increase in weekly vessel calls.
