Volvo CE Shifts More Equipment Production To US Factory

Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Volvo Construction Equipment is considerably boosting output at its Shippensburg, Pennsylvania factory, which will provide more than half of the equipment Volvo CE offers in North America.

Less than a year after declaring its ambitions for localization, the firm has begun shipping its first US-built excavators and bigger wheel loaders. Shippensburg will add 11 new models to its North American offering, which already includes 30 excavators, wheel loaders, and compactors.

Volvo CE claims that manufacturing additional equipment closer to clients would reduce lead times by more than six weeks and make its North American supply chain less subject to geopolitical and trade interruptions. The current addition cost $40 million, while overall expenditure at Shippensburg has surpassed $1.4 billion since 2007.

In addition, the corporation is localizing more of its supply chain, with a goal of increasing business with Pennsylvania suppliers by 30% by 2030. The 436,000-square-foot manufacturing facility has been reorganized around three flexible production lines, with extra welding capability added for excavators.

While Volvo CE does not expressly state that the expansion is in reaction to US tariffs, more local manufacturing may lower susceptibility to tariffs and other import-related expenses. The company's approach is more widely focused on geopolitical instability, supply chain resilience, shorter delivery times, and more production flexibility.

The move follows a broader trend among global equipment makers to produce machines closer to their key customers, especially as trade policy and supply-chain concerns become more influential in where excavators, loaders, and other heavy equipment are made.
